Cumnock, East Ayrshire

A little bit about Cumnock…

People have settled in and around these parts of Ayrshire for over 5,000 years. Cumnock first became a Burgh in 1509, establishing the town’s right to weekly markets and Fair Days. Although Cumnock was initially a market town, it also became well known for its mining heritage, and for being the home to James Keir Hardie, who was instrumental in the making of the Labour Party. The area is well known for mining, but other industries such as pottery, manufacturing, snuff boxes, transport & haulage and weaving have all played a part in Cumnock’s history.

One fun fact you may not know is that Cumnock has produced a few well known footballers. These include Aberdeen star Archie Glen, Scottish Internationalist Eric Caldow, football manager George Burley and George’s nephew, Celtic star Craig Burley.

What’s been happening?

We’ve been in Cumnock since June 2015. Since we started working in the area lots has been happening. There has been a high level of community engagement; several community litter picks organised by local people; the launch of Cumnock’s Community Action Plan, the creation of a SCIO dedicated to Cumnock Action Plan and much more

How can you get involved?

You can find contact details for the Cumnock Community Co-ordinator on this page. Please get in touch, as we’re keen to get to know the wider community. You might like to tell us about changes you’d like to bring about, or if you represent a group or organisation, how we could work together. You could also check out the Cumnock Action Plan website, and speak to the group behind so much of the activity.

We asked Shaun what one of his favourite things about Cumnock is so far, and he said…

The passion and determination of local people. Much, if not all of the local industry has gone, but what remains is a genuine sense of community spirit. People are willing to try and if it doesn’t work, they will try again. For a community the size of Cumnock, the local people are very well connected, which has been one the things that has led to the success of Cumnock Action Plan so far.
