Sereniti Community Story

By Corra Foundation and Sereniti
This story is part of a series of community stories from organisations receiving funding from the Boost fund in partnership with STV Children’s Appeal. This story is written by Corra’s Community Grants team alongside Sereniti and explores how people across Scotland are working together to support their communities.
Sereniti are a small volunteer-run charity supporting families in Aberdeen who have children with additional support needs – particularly Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic children. We met with Ade at Inchgarth Community Centre, where Sereniti meets weekly to hold their activities. We chatted with Ade over a coffee in the community café. Ade set up Sereniti in 2020 motivated by her own experience as parent. Three years on, Sereniti are working with 10 local families and Ade now volunteers as Sereniti’s Charity Co-ordinator. Her son (now 14!) still enjoys coming along to the play sessions each week.
After transitioning to delivering in-person activities following the pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis brought another period of instability for the organisation.
After losing their original space, Sereniti were struggling to afford a regular let. The changing venues were really tough on the kids who need a familiar space. Sereniti have now secured a room in Inchgarth Community Centre as well as some storage space, giving them some much needed security.
Sereniti are excited to continue delivering their regular free play sessions and parents’ café, and are next working on setting up some regular music sessions.
