Cumbernauld and Carbrain Community Hub

By Cumbernauld & Carbrain Community Hub
This post is shared by the Cumbernauld and Carbrain Community Hub. It highlights the importance of community spaces alongside support and funding to get ideas into action.
The hub’s origins began with a small women’s group based in Carbrain Primary School. The group had dreams of creating a community space for people within their community – something that the area lacked and desperately needed. Through support from Shazia and the People in Place programme, the group started building their vision. The hub, the communities it engages with, and the services within, have grown substantially and continue to adapt to meet the needs of the local communities that we engage with on a day-to-day basis.
Within the hub, we run a range of services and groups, all aimed at bringing people together, reducing poverty and isolation, and creating a sense of community. These include a community pantry, free community fridge, free period products, men’s group, wellness group, adult’s arts and crafts group, women’s group, LGBTQ+ youth group, bagpiping classes, breakfast club, and baby massage. As well as this, we also work in partnership with a variety of organisations including Social Security Scotland and North Lanarkshire Disability Team who run drop-in sessions within the hub every second Thursday.
These services, and the links that we have made with other organisations, allow for our hub to continue to support people within our community when they need it the most. Not only do we provide services such as our community pantry that enables people to free up their income, but we also provide social activities that facilitate people building their confidence and connections with others. For example, the wellness group, that runs each week, provides a safe space for those struggling with their mental health to engage with others in a similar situation, share their stories and trauma, and build their confidence.
We have found that through this confidence building, those who started off using the hub have gone on to volunteer with us and provide their own input into the space and what goes on within.
This shows just how important the hub has been in empowering people to get involved in their community. Through volunteering at the hub, they have first-hand experience of many issues, can learn new skills, and play a key role in the decision making of the hub.
