Democracy Matters Corra Response

By Julie Aitken
Corra responded to a Scottish Government Consultation called Democracy Matters. This is part of the Local Governance Review which looks at how power, responsibility and resources are shared with local government and communities. Through Corra’s grant making and Place Programme, we work alongside many communities across Scotland.
When we respond to a consultation or provide evidence, we do so based on the learning gained from our work and insights gathered from grant holder reports. For this consultation, we only provided answers to questions that we had evidence to support.
Our response to the Democracy Matters consultation shares insights on how communities are currently involved in decision making that affects them, their experiences of this, and how communities might make use of increased powers. We reflect on the importance of widening representation within community spaces, what enables people to get involved and some of the barriers to participation that people experience.
