Independent Human Rights Fund for Scotland supports Human Rights Defenders

The Independent Human Rights Fund for Scotland is making a series of new grants to support organisations in their work with Human Rights Defenders.
Human Rights Defenders are people who work peacefully to promote or protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, whether acting alone or with others and on their own human rights or the rights of others.
The Independent Human Rights Fund for Scotland will make grants totalling £125,000 to support the work of four organisations with Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in different areas:
- Children’s Parliament for their work with child HRDs
- Environmental Rights Centre for Scotland for their work with HRDs
- Glasgow Disability Alliance for their work with disabled HRDs
- Making Rights Real for their work with HRDs
The Fund will also support the involvement of international HRD fellows currently engaged with the Scottish Human Rights Defender Fellowship.
These grants will support the work of HRDs in Scotland over the next year, and will help raise awareness of how HRDs should be supported, as well as contributing to the Fund’s learning about how to best advance human rights in Scotland.
Corra CEO Carolyn Sawers said:
“Human Rights Defenders are the people who stand up for themselves and others, often at great personal cost. We know more support is needed for Human Rights Defenders and I’m delighted that the Independent Human Rights Fund for Scotland is contributing to this. We, along with our partners in the Fund look forward to learning from these grants, and from the organisations and individual Human Rights Defenders involved.”
The Independent Human Rights Fund for Scotland is supported by eight funders from Scotland and the wider UK: AB Charitable Trust, Binks Trust, Cattanach, Corra Foundation, The Baring Foundation, Indigo Trust, The Robertson Trust and William Grant Foundation.
